Designer Sunglasses at Duty Free: Usually a Decent Deal, Sometimes a Great One

Sunglasses are one of the few luxury items where duty-free pricing often beats US retail. Here's how to check fit, lenses and price before you buy.

Sunglasses are my favorite duty-free purchase. They're small, they don't count as liquids, and prices are often lower than US department stores. But there are a few things that can turn a good buy into a bad one.

Why sunglasses are a good duty-free category

Designer sunglasses have high markups, and duty-free shops compete hard on them. Multi-buy promotions, like a percentage off a second pair, are common. The price per item is also usually under the US personal exemption, so no customs headaches.

What to check before buying

**Polarized or not.** Polarized lenses cut glare from water and roads. Great for driving and beaches. They can make phone and car screens look strange. Try them while looking at your phone.

**Fit.** Try them on and look down. If they slide, they're too big. Ask staff if they can adjust the arms.

**UV protection.** Look for a 100% UV or UV400 sticker. Any reputable brand will have it.

**Lens category.** Some sunglasses list a category from 0 to 4. Category 3 is standard for bright sun. Category 4 is very dark and not legal for driving in some places.

Price check

Look up the US price before you fly, or check quickly on your phone in the shop. Remember, US retailers often discount sunglasses at the end of summer. Airport prices are steadier.

Warranty and repairs

Keep the receipt and the case. Many brands offer repairs through any authorized shop worldwide, but only with proof of purchase.

Avoid fakes

Buy from official airport duty-free shops, not street vendors near tourist areas. Fakes can lack proper UV protection, which is worse than no sunglasses at all because your pupils widen behind dark lenses.

Where to look

Dubai Duty Free often runs sunglasses promotions across many brands. Heinemann shops in Europe carry a wide range and frequently offer multi-buy deals. DFS has luxury brand eyewear at many of its locations. Amazon is your quick reference for US pricing.

Verdict

Sunglasses are one of the best things to buy at duty free. Try them on, check the lenses and keep the receipt. If you find a multi-buy deal, grab a spare pair for the car.
