Cognac, Gin and Rum at Duty Free: Where the Real Deals Hide
Whisky gets all the attention, but some of the best duty-free value is in cognac, premium gin and aged rum. Here's what to look for on the shelf.
Where to buy this bottle

Most travelers walk past the whisky aisle and grab a bottle of something familiar. Fair enough. But some of the best value in duty free sits one shelf over, in cognac, premium gin and aged rum.
Cognac: VSOP is the sweet spot
Cognac grades go VS, VSOP, XO. VS is young and fine for mixing. XO is luxurious and pricey. VSOP sits in the middle, aged at least four years, and it's where duty-free pricing often looks best compared with US stores.
Big cognac houses also make travel-exclusive blends. Some are excellent. Check the age category on the label and compare the price with the regular VSOP on the same shelf.
Gin: look for liters and local brands
Premium gin in liter bottles is common at airports and often well priced. The smarter move is local gin. Many European and Asian airports stock small local distilleries you won't find at home. A local gin makes a much better souvenir than another bottle of the brand you can buy at any liquor store.
Rum: aged rums are underrated
Aged rums from the Caribbean and Latin America are some of the best value in spirits, and duty-free shelves often carry 8- to 15-year expressions at fair prices. If you like whisky, try a dry aged rum. It's a revelation for the price.
Price check rules
- Compare price per ml. Liters vs 700 ml vs 750 ml matters.
- Use a currency app. Shelf prices in local currency hide surprises.
- Ask about multi-buy promotions, which are common for spirits.
Packing and allowances
- If you have a connecting flight, ask for a sealed security bag. Keep the receipt visible.
- US returning residents generally get 1 liter duty free. Extra bottles are allowed but subject to duty and state rules.
- Wrap bottles in clothes in your checked bag if you're moving them later. Bubble wrap sleeves are cheap and worth it.
Where to look
Dubai Duty Free has a huge spirits section and regular bundle deals. Heinemann covers many European airports where local gins and cognacs shine. DFS focuses on premium and rare bottles. Amazon is handy for gift boxes, bottle protectors and glassware back home.
Verdict
Skip the familiar bottle you can buy at your corner store. Grab a VSOP cognac, a local gin or an aged rum instead. You'll pay a fair price and bring home something that actually feels like a trip.
